ABOUT
Sophie van Bree (1995) is a Dutch documentary filmmaker and director working between the Netherlands and Scotland. She specializes in poetic, cinematic storytelling that explores mental health and other vulnerable themes. After two years studying social work and psychology, she pursued film school in the Netherlands.
In 2019, she graduated in Film from the HKU - University of the Arts. During her bachelor's degree, she interned in television program development, made a documentary in Uganda, and directed the mid-length participation documentary Prince Not Quite Charming, which broadcast in the Netherlands. After her bachelor's degree, she was part of Docwerk '20 - the creative breeding ground for film talent Docwerk from the NTR (Dutch public broadcaster). In 2021 she won the Gelderland Film Pitch 3 (Go Short - International Short Film Festival) with the personal documentary Synchronous.
In 2022, Sophie began her Master's in Film Directing at Edinburgh College of Art with a focus on Film Medicine - making films around mental health. She graduated with honors in 2023 with the short poetic documentary Luna in Wonderland. After her master's degree, she won the Amsterthem Pitch (Shortcutz) with the short poetic documentary Chico (2024) and started the development program Teledoc Campus. This resulted in the short poetic documentary Mind of Sea (2025), which was broadcast and longlisted for the Golden Calves '25 at the Netherlands Film Festival.
In 2025, Sophie was selected for the Scottish Documentary Institute's Bridging the Gap - a trainings program for emerging talent. She is currently developing a poetic documentary short about a community in Scotland. Beside her own films, Sophie works freelance as a researcher/director for documentaries, television, and branded content.
